Virtual Career Counseling

College and university career centers offer a number of extremely valuable services and events to their students including alumni panels, resume critiques, and one-on-one career counseling. In the coming weeks we�re going to highlight how Brim is helping counselors reach more students by enabling them to deliver services and host events in new ways. Today we�re starting with the bread and butter of career services: the one-on-one counseling session.

One-on-one career counseling is one of the most valuable services provided to students and other job seekers by career offices. In their 2012-2013 Benchmark Survey, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) identified career counseling by appointment as the single most common service being provided by career centers in the United States. One-on-one counseling isn�t going away any time soon!

But it is changing dramatically as new technology makes it possible to reach students who either can�t make it in to the career office or who just can�t seem to find the time. For this reason, virtual counseling services are becoming more and more common. The NACE study mentioned above found that 64% of career centers offered online counseling of some kind in 2013�and that number has only continued to grow. Some offices do online counseling sessions through text-based chat applications. Others use video chat platforms.
